SPG points 35% off promotion extended: a few tips on maximizing SPG points

This is the best public non-targeted promotion to purchase SPG points with 35% off on purchases of 5000 points or more, and now this promotion has been extended to July 14th, which means you still have two weeks to determine if you want to but in.

For me, it is an amazing offer that I definitely will go for it: for 30,000 points of purchase (this offer limits 30,000 points of purchase per account), you just spend 682.5 USD, which is equivalent to 2.28 cents apiece. But according to the valuations from many famous travel bloggers (and my own experience), Starpoints are worth at least 2.8 cents each.

There are a wide variety of ways to use your Starpoints — from hotel stays to transferring to airline programs and SPG Moments, and also you can redeem travel packages if you have a lots of points in stock.

So how to know that if your redemption of Starpoints for your hotel stay is worth it or not? For example, if you are aiming at limited budget hotels, search for category 1 SPG hotels and you just have to spend 2000 points for a weekend one night stay-you basically only paid 45 US dollars-even cheaper than Airbnb. But the room rate, of course is in most cases more than 80 US dollars for a category 1 hotel. If you are including category 2 as well, there are many more options out there...see the screenshot below for more details:

More details on the category and points can be found in the chart:

So the basic principle is that you simply compare the value of your points (when you purchased them) and the room rate. If the difference is distinguishable-big congrats-you have made an awesome deal by purchasing and redeeming points.
